Making public transport quality measurable
Quality in public transport is recorded by people standing on platforms and riding the vehicles. MAF turns that into data that stays comparable across surveyors, lines and months.
The brief
A quality survey is made where conditions are worst: on the platform, on board, with poor reception, under time pressure. For the numbers to mean anything, different surveyors have to record the same situation the same way — otherwise the analysis measures the surveyors rather than the service.
The solution
An Android application that works fully offline and syncs afterwards, guided by a defined criteria catalogue rather than free text. The web side plans the surveys, maintains the catalogue and evaluates the results in a structured form.
The outcome
Surveys stay comparable across surveyors, lines and periods, and the measurement method itself can be shown to the contracting authority.
The hard part of measuring quality is not the analysis but the recording. It happens where nobody types comfortably: on a platform, on a moving train, on a bus with poor reception. An application that depends on the network at that moment loses precisely the survey being made.
MAF therefore works entirely offline and synchronises once there is a connection again. Recording follows a defined criteria catalogue with explicit values rather than free-text fields — not for convenience, but because free text destroys the comparability the whole analysis rests on.
The web side plans surveys, maintains the catalogue and evaluates results. That the catalogue is versioned is not a detail: when a criterion changes, it must still be possible to see which version an older survey was measured against.
