How we design
A project does not start with a design here. It starts with several. This page shows what that means in practice — using our own website.
Why more than one direction
A single design forces a yes-or-no decision about something nobody has seen yet. What then gets discussed is detail — the size of the heading, the shade of blue — while the real question stays unasked: should the company read as technical or as established, as plain or as warmer.
Several directions make exactly that question discussable. They are not variants of one design but different answers to how a company wants to appear. Side by side, the decision takes ten minutes, and it has a reason behind it.

What switching actually is
The fragment above does not switch between four designs. It is one design whose colour and type values are exchanged.
Every colour is a named value
No component writes a colour down. It asks for the role — surface, text, accent — and the direction answers. Changing direction means swapping a block of values, not rebuilding pages.
Values are named by role, not by appearance
There is no "dark blue", because in the dark theme that stops being true. There is "text on an accent surface" — and that value is white in the light theme and near-black in the dark one, where white falls to 2.68:1.
Contrast is measured, not estimated
Each of the four palettes is checked against fourteen text-on-background pairs; none falls below 4.5:1. That is not a person reviewing before handover, it is the test suite on every change.
No typeface from a server we do not control
The typefaces of the directions we did not ship are on our own server too. One is downloaded only when you actually look at that direction — which is why this page costs nothing until you switch.
How this website was decided
Four directions became nine in conversation. The objection that settled it was one no design document anticipates: the dark blue panels of an intermediate version were unbalancing the page. Three further gradings of the same direction came out of that observation, differing only in the weight of those surfaces.
That is the actual point of this page. Choosing does not end at the choice. It is the start of a conversation in which a client can say things there is otherwise no vocabulary for.
